This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the mechanism of Acid catalyzed Nucleophilic addition reactions. A weaker nucleophile doesn’t have the tendency to attack the electrophilic carbon of the carbonyl group and hence no addition reaction. In an acidic medium, the more electronegative oxygen atom of the carbonyl group attacks the proton and the pi bond shift towards oxygen making carbon more positive and hence more electrophilic allowing a weaker nucleophile to attack and make addition product.
