This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers Haloform reaction and Iodoform test. Methyl ketones and acetaldehyde (both containing a methyl on either side of the carbonyl- group) react with halogens in the presence of sodium hydroxide to give 4 products. 1. Haloform (tri halo methane), 2. Sodium salt of carboxylic acid, 3. Sodium halide salt, 4. Water. The formation of yellowish Iodoform helps distinguish between methyl ketones and other ketones. It also helps distinguish acetaldehyde from other aldehydes and methanol/ethanol from other primary alcohols. The detailed reaction mechanism is explained in the lecture.
