This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones  (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the addition of Grignard Reagents to carbonyl compounds. These are organo-metallic compounds with an alkyl group which acts as a nucleophile and attacks the electrophilic carbon of the carbonyl group. The pi bond then attacks the positive part of Grignard reagent i.e.-MgX. This product is then hydrolyzed in the presence of an acid to give 2 products, one of which is simply an alcohol. This method allows for the conversion of any carbonyl group containing aldehyde or ketone into any other alcohol (primary, secondary or tertiary).
